Message from Kerry asylum seeker meeting is Killarney is full, we can’t take any more
Cllr Marie Moloney speaking at public meeting in Killarney on Sunday night over plans to send 70 more asylum seekers to the town
A call has been made for Integration Minister Roderic O’Gorman to come to Kerry to meet a deputation of concerned Killarney residents ahead of plans to open a new direct provision centre on the Muckross road.
Almost 300 people attended a public meeting in the Killarney Avenue Hotel on Sunday night to voice their anger and concerns about the news that 70 more asylum seekers or international protection applicants are to be housed in Kingscourt / Harmony Inn on the Muckross Road - a guesthouse with 22 bedrooms.
The all-male international protection applicants are set to arrive within days. Councillors and TD's were informed just last week that they were to arrive, without any consultation with either the public representatives or the local organisations that work with refugees and asylum seekers who say they are already under pressure.
